GIF Playback: Reverse, Speed & Loop
One tool for the three playback tweaks: play a GIF backwards, run it faster or slower, and control how many times it repeats.
Reverse a GIF
Reversing plays the frames in the opposite order, which turns a fall into a rise and an explosion into an implosion. The frame timing is kept exactly, so a smooth original stays smooth backwards. For a boomerang effect — forward then backward — merge the original with its reverse in the GIF Merger.
Change a GIF's speed
Each GIF frame carries its own delay in milliseconds. Slowing down multiplies every delay, speeding up divides it, and the ratio between frames is preserved — so a GIF with a long pause at the end keeps that pause, proportionally. Browsers refuse to play frames faster than about 20 ms, so 4× is capped there rather than dropped.
Set how many times a GIF loops
A GIF can loop forever, play once, or repeat a fixed number of times — the count is stored in the file itself, and every browser and chat app honors it. "Play once" is handy for announcements and loading states; a fixed count keeps a reaction GIF from nagging in a long thread.
